Singapore Airlines replaces Rolls-Royce engine that failed on Airbus plane after takeoff

Singapore Airlines says it has replaced a Rolls-Royce Plc engine that shut down on an Airbus A380 airplane shortly after takeoff.

The company said in a statement Wednesday the plane had to return to Singapore’s Changi International Airport after taking off Tuesday heading to Hong Kong.

The airline replaced the aircraft’s Trent 900 number three engine, and the plane resumed operation after being grounded about 12 hours.

Singapore Airlines said it is investigating the engine failure with Rolls-Royce and Airbus.

A Trent 900 engine blew apart in an oil fire on a Qantas A380 flight last November. The plane made an emergency landing in Singapore, and Airbus replaced dozens of engines in the A380 fleet worldwide.
