AA`s largest order of jets in aviation history
Despite a quarter-billion-dollar loss in the second quarter, American Airlines has placed the largest order of aircrafts in aviation history, it has been announced Thursday.
The acquisition of the new fleet will improve accommodations for passengers, adding 460 “narrowbody” fuel-efficient models that will reduce petroleum costs – the first of which will hit runways by 2013.
American Airlines (AA) is hopeful the reduction in fuel costs will have a positive impact on consumer’s wallets in the future, but they have not released any official statement as to whether add-on fees will be dropped anytime soon.
AA cut a deal with Boeing, acquiring 200 aircraft, with an option to purchase 100 more. The airline also bought 260 Airbus models, with an option to pickup 105 more by 2022.
The Boeing models are from the 737 family. Boeing has yet to release the specifications for the new AA model, but existing 737’s already in the air carry a seat capacity of 130-200 passengers, and is designed for short to medium flight paths.
The Airbus models will be from the A320 line, known as the “single aisle-jetliner,” according to Airbus.com, and seats around 150 passengers. The Associated Press calls the deal with Airbus “a major coup for Europe’s Airbus because American currently flies an all-Boeing fleet.”
