Plane crashes north of Calgary
Emergency crews were called to the scene of a plane crash north of Calgary late Thursday morning.
The plane crashed approximately 1 kilometre south of Big Hill Springs Road on Panorama Road just after 11:00a.m.
The pilots were attempting to take off in an ultra light plane when they were unable to gain enough altitude. They decided to abort the takeoff when they noticed power lines in their flight path and crash landed just west of Panorama Road.
The aircraft flipped several times before it came to a stop on its roof.
A 32-year-old man and a 38-year-old man, both from Crossfield, were inside the plane at the time. One of the men was able to free himself and sustained only minor injuries. The other was taken to Foothills Hospital in serious but stable condition.
RCMP will conduct an investigation for Transport Canada over the next several hours.
Investigators say it’s remarkable the men were not more seriously injured.
